One of the most notorious periods in Danish history
You can’t talk about Denmark without talking about the one of the most notorious periods in Danish history – the age of the Vikings. It began around 793 AD and lasted around 250 years. Let me tell you a little story about the vikings, it goes like this- back in the good old days when the vikings were conquering the coasts of Europe and the waters of the Atlantic, one band of these rough Vikings was hard hit in battle.
As they returned to their ship, tired and exhausted from the hard battles, with shields, swords, and jagged helmets. They wanted to make one of their favorite dishes – pancakes. They didn’t have proper cookware and the right conditions, so they made something close… Æbleskiver (may be pronounced as “a-bla-ski-va”).

Æbleskiver?
A type of pancake is cooked on a special stove pan. Crispy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside, it is a traditional dish in Denmark. The name actually means apple slices, so why would they call it ‘apple slices’ if there is no apple in it? Well, it was originally filled with small pieces of apple or applesauce.
The dish is usually served with jam and/or sugar. Most popular in Christmas and the winter times. You can buy it and cook it yourself (I assure you, cooking is way better).

You are probably wondering how you will find a shield to make this stimulating dish as the Vikings. Well, a special pan with 7 holes in it will do it. These pans can be found everywhere in Denmark, but outside of Denmark, they may be hard to find. Otherwise, a puff dumpling pan or a Japanese takoyaki pan will also work.
Conclusion
So yeah… this is how the known Danish dish was invented
